One Semester at a Time

Bachelor Degrees

university diploma

Going back to college as a working adult is difficult. I should know — I took four years off between high school and college. I was lucky, though — I had the financial means (thanks to my parents) to work part time and go to school full time. My husband, on the other hand, has had to work full time the entire time he’s been in school, so it has taken him a decade to get where he is now: a semester away from graduation.

The key to making it through college, especially if you have to work your way through your degree, is simply to take it one semester at a time. Don’t focus on how many more credits you have left to take, as that is like looking down the whole ski slope — instead, tackle one mogul or two moguls (or classes) at a time.

This can be hardest at the beginning of your college career, when you are fulfilling your general education classes. Later on, however, when you start taking more electives and upper-division courses in your chosen areas of study, you should find it much easier to get excited about school.

School is not always an easy proposition, but as long as you don’t think about how much you have left, and just take it one semester at a time, before you know it you’ll be buying a university diploma frame to display the proof of your accomplishment!

A Reason to Be Proud

Bachelor Degrees

As expensive as college is for most people these days, it’s a pretty significant thing these days to graduate college and get your degree. It takes a lot of hard work, and ought to be honored as one of your life’s greatest achievements.

One of the best ways to show off your pride and your accomplishment is to frame your college diploma. A college diploma frame can range from simple and understated, to quite large with a matted border around your diploma. You can also choose between different finishes, black or a metal finish such as gold, pewter, or silver.

Your diploma display ought to be all about showing off your personality and tastes. For instance, my diploma will be framed in a lovely antique wooden frame. I already have it, and the color of my matting, all planned out.

Another thing you ought to be sure to do is to mount your framed diploma on the best spot of the wall, whether that is in your work office, your home office, your library, or wherever you would like to put it. You put years of your life and a lot of money into getting that diploma, and it deserves a place of honor on your wall!

Choosing a design school

Bachelor Degrees

Since I was about five years old, I have loved fashion and anything having to do with clothing.  I can remember constantly playing dress up and as soon as I was old enough I was making and designing my own clothes.  So of course when it came time to decide what I wanted to do after high school, I chose to apply to a fashion design school.  I was only going to apply to the fashion school, but my guidance counselor wanted me to have a second choice and she suggested I look into schools that offer similar courses.

I found an art school close by that offered not only traditional art courses, but also courses in clothing design and architecture, which my guidance counselor thought would be a great start in case I didn’t get into the fashion design school right away.

Well, I took her advice and ended up being accepted to both schools!  Even though I have always dreamed of designing my own line of clothing, I want to weigh my decision and make the right one for me. Now I have to decide which school I want to go to, because the idea of the art school has kind of grown on me.

Schools

Bachelor Degrees

golf jobThere are approximately 18,000 golf courses in the US, and each one of them needs professionally trained staff. If you love to play golf, you might consider going to golf course management schools to get the training you need for certification in working in this area. Professional golf careers can be very rewarding, and are anything but routine. The game of golf is endlessly fascinating and if it is your first love and you’re looking for a way to devote your life to doing something that fascinates and entertains you, a career as a golf professional might be something you will love on a daily basis.

Really enjoying what you’re doing all day long helps the day go by so much faster, and having a career that combines the technical side of the golf course with the softer side of working with fellow golfers can be very rewarding. Most people who are playing golf are having a great time and unless they’re playing badly, they are really enjoying themselves. Golf course management training can be part of an ongoing education, or it can be completed in two or four years at accredited schools. If it seems like something you’d like to do for a living, check it out.

The Wandering Nephew

Bachelor Degrees

It’s often said that men reach maturity later than women. I have seen evidence of this in my nephew who is nearly twenty one and has never had a full-time job. The part-time jobs he worked for a few weeks and then bailed. I worry about him; I pray for him, I write encouraging cards for his birthday. Mostly, though I remain a little angry. I see his aimless lifestyle of watching soccer, partying with his friends, and bumming money from his grandfather as a sad existence.

My nephew has tried community college several times, and is now pursuing an online associate degree, two classes at a time. Although I appreciate his college attempts, I also see it’s breaking his mother financially. I wonder about my role. I wonder about his self-esteem. I wonder about the emergence of a man from teenage angst. I hope one day he gets an MBA business degree in economics, or web-design, or green technology.

Waiting for maturity at times is painful for the observer. I hope my nephew takes his online education seriously and one day pursues a masters degree program online. Whatever his journey, I pray that I can be patient and remember the last days of youth are not a permanent condition.

College Rankings

Bachelor Degrees

Universities and colleges are ranked on a number of different elements; some are more objective than others (such as statistical information).  College and university rankings are used in a number of ways, least of which is the prestige of those schools that hold top positions.  Different ranking systems measure different statistics and facts, and these ranks are used for evaluating a variety of elements at each school such as academic success and administrative efficiency.

One of the ranking systems, Webmetrics Ranking of World Universities, is devoted to ranking schools based on the academic and research element.  Newsweek publishes the Top 100 Global Universities.  These ranks are compiled from information such as the number of researchers, articles, the percentage of international faculty and students, ratio of faculty to students and the number of library holdings.

Yet another ranking system, the Mines ParisTech Professional Ranking of World Universities which bases its rankings on the status of graduates within a certain time period after their completion of studies, such as salary, senior managerial positions occupied and new companies started by graduates of any given school.  There are a variety of school ranking systems, but only when several are considered together can one truly get a sense for what the ranking of a school ought to be, as they all consider different criteria.
