Getting a medical education through an online program is a smart choice for a lot of students. Attending online medical school allows students to work while going to school. It may also be more affordable than attending a traditional medical school. However it’s important for students who are getting their medical degrees online to realize that there is a lot of value in supplementing the online education.

Online education offers many benefits but it has some drawbacks as well. The main drawback is that there is a limit to the amount of hands-on, interactive experience that you get with this type of education. This is something that is changing as computer technology improves and becomes more interactive. Nevertheless, it’s not the same as being in a classroom.

This isn’t a problem as long as you supplement your online degree with some interactive experience. If you’re getting on online occupational therapy degree then you might volunteer once a week at a local occupational therapy clinic. If you’re getting a degree in medical transcription then you might form a study group with other students who are getting this same type of degree. Increase your interaction and hands-on experience and you’ll get more out of your online medical degree.

Just the other day I was talking to my old roommate from college.  She went to school to become a physical therapist and we were talking about the challenges of being a full time physical therapist as well as a full time mom.  She also wanted to find time to fit in an advanced degree in physical therapy.  Since my background is in education, I mentioned to her about online medical schools that offer online health doctorate programs.  The one that she wanted to pursue was called a transitional physical therapy online degree.  This meant that she would learn additional skills to augment her already knowledgeable physical therapy skills.

She was absolutely thrilled to find out that there were online programs that had flexibility as an option because of the very full life that she was currently enjoying.  Having a program such as this was an added bonus to making her life a little more do-able!  When people have a passion for learning, I do not think it is something that you lose and people should foster it when you can.  This online option was a perfect fit for her, and I think that it is something that she will end up doing by the end of the year.

As more and more hospitals, pharmaceutical and medical supply companies, not to mention local medical practices are controlled by corporations, there is a growing need for medical administrators that will only increase as we get further into the 21^st Century. Like my brother said, if you don’t already have a lot of experience as a medical administrator, one of the best ways to prepare for this career path is through pursuing higher education. It’s great to have a Master degree in some type of medical specialty, which is what he has, but if you want a high-powered job working at a big corporation (like I do!), then you need to get a doctorate.

I was a little intimidated by the concept, but he said one of the best options for a doctorate is to get a Doctor of Health Sciences online degree. Doing studies mostly online will enable me to keep working at my current job, and won’t require me to spend a lot of time commuting to and from classes.
